When I opened up my newest difficulty of Cook’s Country magazine, one recipe as we speak jumped out at me – those Bergers-style cookies. I had by no ability heard of them before, but after studying by ability of the article, I discovered that they're noted within the Baltimore area, hailing from a Bakery that was opened in 1800’s by German immigrants.

Aside from their storied history, I couldn’t get the image out of my mind! A comfortable vanilla cookie topped with a complete HALF INCH of chocolate fudge frosting. This was absolutely a cookie with my identify written throughout it, and I wasted no time in whipping up a batch.

These cookies are pretty much a chocolate lover’s dream come true.

The base cookie is a tremendous soft, yet sturdy, vanilla sugar cookie. But in contrast to a cut-out sugar cookie, extra like a bakery or shop plain comfortable sugar cookie. The dough is tremendous simple to blend collectively and require no relax time.

And then the frosting. OH, THE FROSTING.

It mixes up like brownie batter (I double dare you to now not swipe a couple of tastes!), then units like fudge. The addition of Dutch cocoa powder provides the frosting such a advantageous flavor, versus utilizing just milk chocolate alone.

Since I’ve by no ability had real Bergers cookies, I can’t inform you how near those come to the original, but they're heavily amazing. The subsequent time I’m within the Baltimore area, I’m absolutely going to search them out.

If you’ve had Bergers cookies, I’d love to pay attention from you about how those stack up!

RECIPE NOTES:

  1. The temperature and consistency of the frosting are important. It have to sign up among 90 and a hundred ranges and have to resemble thick brownie batter whilst you spoon it onto the cookie. It have to mound and slowly unfold over the cookies. It's okay if a few of the frosting drips down the aspects of the cookies. If the frosting is merely too thick, that ability it's too cool. To make it spreadable, microwave it in 5-second intervals, whisking after every interval, till it registers among 90 and a hundred degrees. If it's going to get too hot, it's going to thin and run off the cookies; on this case, merely allow it cool a bit.
  2. I use the Thermapen instantaneous virtual thermometer.
  3. I used Ghiradelli milk chocolate chips.
